We Provide Potent, Safe & Effective Natural Medicines

The surest way to optimal health for anyone is to eat whole, fresh, unrefined foods that are genetically and seasonally appropriate, drink plenty of clean water, get regular vigorous exercise, have a comfortable and sustaining relationship with family, friends and spirit, get reliable rest and frequent, excellent fun.

If any of that is missing from our lives, and we are way out of balance as a result, sometimes taking concentrated doses of certain supplements can help. That is why I recommend using herbs, vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and glandular products. We use these like drugs, really, as short cuts, in a way, to help us feel well enough soon enough and to have a sense of progress toward well being that will eventually be maintained along with the life-enhancing, fundamental habits of a good life.

We live in an environment with so many invisible, and unavoidable challenges. Even the most enthusiastic and disciplined person will be over-challenged fairly regularly, and using pure and well chosen supplements as natural medicines can help us respond to the inevitable challenges. What we need and how to use it is very individual. I enjoy helping sort through the elements in a persons life to determine which supplements in what doses make the most sense in changing circumstances.

It is my pleasure to lend my expertise to help you figure out what supplements to use for whatever circumstance you find yourself in; I will help you decide how to change what you are using as your circumstances change. I like the idea of using the fewest, most potent combinations of supplements to minimize your cost and maximize convenience.

For our mutual convenience, as well as to provide you the best guarantee of quality and effectiveness in natural medicines that currently exists, BitterRoot Natural Medicine maintains a naturopathic dispensary. It is stocked with the nutritional, herbal and homeopathic products that I recommend for treatment plans. I also keep an extensive selection of botanical tinctures that I use to create individualized formulas for my patients. While it is easy to understand why I would sell the items I recommend in the case of these personalized teas and tinctures, I am sometimes asked if patients ‘have to’ purchase the recommended supplements from our supply. The answer of course is no, we do not require you to use our dispensary products. But we do highly recommend them.

Why do we carry natural medicines?
I maintain the dispensary to provide my patients reliable, high quality medicines in a convenient location. The quality aspect is most important. There is now a huge and ever changing market place for herbs and supplements. There is no ‘watch dog’, no regulatory agency, like the FDA, that oversees this industry and helps to ensure the quality of the products manufactured and sold by health food or grocery stores, or by mail order companies.

I have discovered that the best way to guarantee the quality and potency of a product is to have a long term relationship of accountability with the product supplier. That means if a product does not perform as I expect it to, when used according to our mutually agreed on care plans, the manufacturer hears from me and the patient gets an explanation and a replacement or refund. I have been maintaining relationships with ethical suppliers whose products are both reliable and reasonably priced since 1985.

It’s the nature of the marketplace. There is another, very important reason we maintain our products store. Simply put, by giving you the amount of time you deserve to address your health, I am limited in how many people I can visit with each day. The patient fees we can thus collect are not enough to support our business overhead. In order to open the doors each morning and be here for you, we need the support of the retail aspect of our service.

What about the products available elsewhere?
Part of the value you receive when you become part of BitterRoot Natural Medicine is the advantage of my decades of experience with the products I use. The value of that experience is immeasurable, and really not reproducible by other methods (especially not by reading the advertising related to retail products!) I am not able to comment on items other than those I have experience with. However, if you prefer to use products from other sources, I am always interested in learning about your experience of the effectiveness of items from unfamiliar suppliers. In every case we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various choices as we currently understand them.

Specialty items available at BitterRoot Natural Medicine

Herbal Medicines
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my work is the custom creation of individualized formulas from my botanical tincture stock. This service allows us to change your formula as your condition changes, to adjust for taste preferences or dose concentration. Along with this wonderful flexibility we have the satisfaction of using plant medicines grown and/or harvested in a knowledgeable and respectful manner, by professional herbalists whose skills and eco-protection values are of the highest caliber. I purchase my plant materials exclusively from suppliers who are colleagues I have known and admired for years- thus assuring potent and effective medicines in the context of very positive business and personal relationships.

We have over 2,000 items regularly in stock. There are 150 single botanical tinctures, in either an alcohol or sweet glycerin base.

Special Services
We can also provide tincture in 16 oz or 32 oz sizes as Special Orders, at substantial discount. This service is particularly helpful for long term therapy, or a prevention program. Ask at the front desk for details.

Homeopathic Remedies
Homeopathic medicine is a system that uses very small, specially prepared doses of substances such as plants and minerals. These completely non-toxic preparations are used to stimulate internal self-healing mechanisms. Many people are learning to provide first-aid and acute illness treatments for themselves and their families, using inexpensive homeopathics. We provide an extensive array of both common and hard- to-find homeopathic remedies for home treatment. As a classical homeopathic physician, I also use "constitutional" treatments, meaning we determine which of the more potent, deep-acting remedies is appropriate for an individual's long-standing complaints. Our pharmacy is stocked with high-potency remedies not readily available elsewhere, constitutional prescribing.

It’s Natural; It Works; We make it easy for you
We will be happy to help by receiving phone or email orders and shipping to your chosen address. (Please note that in recent times it has become impossible to ship supplements to over-seas addresses.)
