A Brief Guide to the Naturopathic
   Treatment of Cancer

This is not a comprehensive approach to the treatment of cancer. It is an abbreviated compilation of research and experience, borrowed primarily from my teacher, Dr. Jared Zeff, who states he has gathered it from his own decades of clinical experience, literature reviews, the various lectures of ND experts including Drs. Steve Austin, Paul Reilly, Tim Birdsall and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America staff, and in conversation with these and other colleagues. It does not represent any of the sources cited above, and was put together only to stimulate my thinking when confronted with questions regarding cancer and patients with cancer. Any specific patient will require a treatment plan designed specifically for that individual.

I. Dietary: enhance nutrition and digestion, reduce intrinsic toxin production from maldigestive processes, reduce foods that have carcinogenic potential and increase foods that are protective.
Evaluate and correct nutritional balance and adequacy
Remove intolerant and allergic foods
Stimulate and support digestion as needed with enzymes, tonics, etc.
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
Specific supplementation as individually required

II. Evaluate and support organ and system function
Especially consider adrenal, kidney, liver, cardiovascular, lung, blood

III. Immune Enhancement: stimulate and support the body’s intrinsic cancer fighting mechanisms, and eliminate chronic infections.
There are a variety of immune tonic substances, that are more or
less appropriate for individual situations
specifically Astragalus,
mushroom fractions, immune tonic/antibacterial and antiviral herbs.
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
Weekly or twice weekly acupuncture
Treat specific infections as needed

IV. Antioxidant therapy: support immune function and reduce tendency for cancer generation and organ damage
Vitamin C, E
Glutathione/NAC
Alpha- lipoic acid
Selenium

V. Detoxification: improve overall function by removing accumulated toxins and irritants
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
3 week MediClear or other liver ‘cleanse’ twice annually

VI. Specific anti-cancer approaches:
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
Proteolytic enzymes
Co-Q 10 - high dose: breast, prostate, and cervix tumors
Melatonin - high dose: breast cancer
Quercetin: oral, fibrosarcoma, skin, breast, colon
Yew preparations
Anti-estrogenic preparations: soy, phytoestrogens, Indole-3-carbanol
Lycopene and zinc: prostate
Hoxsey-like formula
Botanical alterative formulae: Phytolacca, Artemesia annua, etc.
Modified citrus pectin protective against metastasis
Green tea polyphenols inhibit skin and estrogen-sensitive cancer progression; Green tea catechins inhibit prostate tumor growth

VII. Treatment for the ill effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and surgical support
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
Cadmium sulphate 30,200 prn for chemo “illness”
Nux, Tabac, Cocc, etc., for nausea, or ginger tea
Detoxification factors to aid liver functions
Antioxidants to protect healthy tissues
Astragalus increases tumor killing effectiveness of interlukin-2 by 10-fold
Vitamin C is synergistic with adriamycin, cysplatin, and paclitaxil
Quercetin and catechin in green tea reduce malignant cell resistance to chemotherapy
Glutathione protects normal tissues against the toxic effects of cisplatin, etc.
Glutathione increases the effectiveness of adriamycin
Silymarin protects against the toxic effects of chemo and increases the effectiveness of cisplatin and adriamycin

VIII. Spiritual life: to gain insight and healing of causative factors, and create the basis for deep healing; for meaning-making:
Daily prayer and meditation
Personal reflection: purpose, new purpose for life
Counseling/psychotherapy Development or utilization of a community of support and healing

IX. General measures for health improvement:
Daily constitutional hydrotherapy
Weekly acupuncture
Constitutional homeopathic medicine
Support the nervous system (avena, hypericum, kali phos 3x, etc.
Promote good sleep
Daily appropriate execise

IIX. Daily dietary basics
